Wilderness Athlete Altitude Advantage

I have just returned from a scouting trip for my upcoming Colorado Mountain Goat hunt in September. This was my second scouting trip into a high altitude area to look for this beautiful animal. In preparation for this trip I started taking Altitude Advantage 5 days before leaving. I then took Altitude Advantage twice a day while at altitude. The results were incredible. I was strong, fresh, and the lack of fatigue I experienced after a 10.1 mile hike all above 11,500' was amazing. This product really helped me while I pushed my body to the maximum.

The flip side of this was very educational. My son, Tekoah, who is 12 years old and an avid outdoorsman already, was with me on the trip. He hiked 5.5 miles above 11,500'. In the past he has hiked up to 13 miles at such heights all without problems. Because he is young and in great shape I thought there was no reason to have him on Altitude Advantage. That was a mistake.

Tekoah had a long week with his first 4 days of football practice and due to some uncontrollable circumstances, he didn't get much sleep. That situation combined with the high altitude hunt led to altitude sickness. About 1 1/2 hours after we were back at our room at 9300' Tekoah said he had a headache. He drank 1.5 liters of water and some sports drinks on the trip. The headache increased. He then began vomiting. It grew in intensity. I took him to the clinic in the town. His vitals were all good and there was no fluid in his lungs. We simply left and got out of altitude. By the next morning he was fine once again.

Altitude sickness is no joke. It also is no respecter of persons. Whether you have been at altitude 100 times without being sick or if you are going high for your first trip, it can affect you. I was foolish to think the way I did. I won't do so again. Research has found no simple formula to when and how one is effected by altitude sickness. Staying hydrated, ascending and acclimating, and having proper nutrition all will help. But even when doing the right things, being in shape, and already living at 6500', altitude sickness still got my son. Don't be a victim of this tough and somewhat scary circumstance. Make Altitude Advantage™ a part of your preparation and a part of your stay at high altitude.
